No other media is able to effectively reduce the frictional heat by lubrication and at the same time to transport the produced heat so efficiently away from the work-piece and tools by cooling as a water-based metalworking fluid.
Unfortunately, water-based metalworking fluids are also good biotope for many microorganisms. A water content of approximately 95 % combined with nearly 5 % of potential nutrients from the metalworking fluid plus a temperature of around 30 °C produced by the heat of the metalworking process provide a suitable environment for many microorganisms like bacteria and fungi.
Therefore, the selection of the right preservative or biocide is a crucial factor to ensure a safe metalworking process.
